As an IT professional, I have to say that I believe that you have a highly unrealistic view of the world, not everything can be about supporting open source, most of the time you gotta be rational and select the best tool for the job and move on.

Adblockers are a critical part of any modern computer’s security suit, and everyone should use them.

I won’t even consider removing mine unless the owners of a site with ads take full responsibility for any dammage to my computer coming from visiting their site with out an adblocker.

This is due to the fact that ads can be hijacked and infect your computer with malware just by accessing the site.

I have also experienced my browser being hijacked by clicking a link that was compromized, it redirected my browser in a loop, then opened a javascript password popup box that took all focus from the browser window and refused to go away, while the page below displayed a message that I needed to call tech support.

It was very annoying to resolve, Firefox would by default restore any pages that was open in a tab if the browser crashed, and since the password prompt was stealing focus from the browser window, I had to kill it through the Task manager, which restored the page on start up…

I had to create a new profile, then it it solved it

Fun fact, when striking oil, you often encounter methane pockets as well, the gas is commonly just burned in a giant flare, this is mainly done for safety, to prevent gas from accumulating on the ground and risking an explosion, but also far reduce the greenhouse effect of the gas.

That is a very idealistic way of looking at the issue, and I am very impressed if you have the skill and time to maintain your computer systems completely free from proprietary software.

Yeah, I have a small Milrotik home router that I opened once, checked out Winbox for 15 min, realized I was WAY out of my depth and got an Asus router instead, this was about 8 years ago though, so things may have changed.

At this moment we are not really big enough to justify a dedicated network tech, which is why Ubiquiti have caught our eye.

Thank you very much for a very thorough run down of the system, we are based in the EU and are trying to make sure that we have as few mandatory ties to US manufacturers as possible while running a modern IT system.

We have thought about MikroTik and Extreme but our CTO wants us to investigate Ubiquiti as it has a nice web UI for all devices on the network which would be a big advantage for our small network.

I will push for a small POC network or demo so we can get a better understanding of it.

Swede here, quick correction, we don’t have piracy taxes here, the tax exists but is is a personal copy tax, to compensate artists from lack of income due to personal copies/backups.

This is not a tax for piracy, which would be nice for consumers

You are right that noone should be driving blind, I fully agree with that, and yes I know that the driver is ultimately legally responsible for the safety of unprotected people in traffic.

But where does the responsibillity of the pedestrian end?

I wrote a rudiculous extreme scenario in another comment in this thread about a person in a ghillie suit playing hide and seek near a road which lead to an accident, please feel free to respond and tell me who you feel are responsible and why in that situation.

There are no right or wrong answers to that scenario, I am simply trying to take this kind of scenario to the edge to try and figure out what the limits are

I can avoid dark objects just fine, what is difficult to deal with is people who wear what could the equivalent of camo, and getting pissed that I didn’t see them until late.

Lets take an extreme scenario, just to try and find the limits of what is the responsibility of a driver and a bicyclist, I know it is a ridiculous scenario, but it is interesting to see were people feel the limits should be.

A person wears a ghillie suit, and lies down next to the road, he is playing a game of extreme hide and seek with a few friends, well the game day just ended, and he stands up just as a car is 50 meters away, the speed limit is 50kmh, it is dusk, the driver of the car swerves to avoid potentially hitting the person, and hits a light pole on the other side of the road.

Who would you say is responsible for the accident?

As someone living in Sweden, I have seen pedestrians and bicyclists wearing dark coloured clothing during autumn nights, they just disappear in the background and VASTLY reduce the distance I can see them at, they just pops out from the background only when you are close to them.

This is not a simple driver issue, these are people who seems to deliberately dress in camo, and then complain that drivers don’t pay enough attention.

I am not asking everyone to wear a high-viz vest all the time, but please get a reflector and show that you have some self preservation instinct

You don’t really need a self hosted app, you can write a sceipt to do the following:

1. Check if file X exists.
2. If file X does exist, delete it
3. If file X doesn’t exist, delete directory Y

Then create a new scheduled task to run the script every week.

The result is that you have a deadman switch with a weeks delay

Unless you recreate file X every week, directory Y will be deleted.

This is a very simplistic example, but it would be decently difficult to figure out.

I am a hobby photographer and usually take a few hundred GBs of photos every year (I shoot in JPG+RAW), I have other media as well, but I am mainly concerned about my photos.

I have them currently saved to a single HDD in my computer, which has worked ok, but I have seen bitrot in some files…

So I was reliable storage, currently thinking of a zraid1 with four normal disks, one parity, one hot spare and one cold spare, I am looking for it to last a minimum of ten years with normal maintenance.

I will probably put 64GB ram in the server, and possibly an SSD cache over time

I do have an old computer that is not in use, but I don’t want to run a Bulldozer plattform…

So I am basing my new server on the AMD Ryzen 4600G, should be fine

You absolutely can judge your own behavior when you are impaired, I have done that plenty of times and decided that I needed a break when driving plenty of times.

The issue is that you are a worse judge of your own behavior when impaired, so you need to take that into account
