We could be like Japan where in order to own a car, you have to prove you have somewhere private to park it instead of just putting it on the street.

But it does allow people to build without meeting a minimum parking standard. Progress and change is a slow process. If removing parking minimums makes 3 developments make small apartments buildings with no parking, a few years down the line there may be more support for an entire neighborhood without parking after seeing the success of the first few developments.
You don’t have to buy one, but in North America your mobility will be severely limited unless your are able to live in a select few places, many of which are expensive because despite popilar american beliefs, it is quite desireable to be able to live car free.
Normal looking house with a parking spot under it is an eyesore yet strip malls and walmart parking swathes are okay…
Is someone sitting accross from a camera and quietly talking to it really much different from someone sitting accross from a person and talking to them?
Actually car centric design is one of the biggest factors that contributes to the housing affordability crisis happening in North America. So it is at least partially car dependancy’s fault they cannot afford their own place.
Here in North America many people claim cops are violating our rights by doing radar, pulling people over etc. Many of those same people claim the cameras are also violating their rights and celebrate when the cameras are vandalized by paint, removal, smashing, or thrown in a lake.
Seems to me people just don’t want to be reminded that speeding is in fact dangerous and illegal and drivers should be held responsible and accountable for it.
I’m in the process of purchasing a house. The current resident used a loanshark to buy the house for her as she could not qualify for traditional financing. After a few years she still could not get traditional financing and the loanshark wants to sell the property. The current tenant is a little upset at me as she views me as stealing the house from under her.
Part of why she can’t afford the house and I can is that she drives a Cadillac escalade and I drive a tiny 5 speed hatchback car.
No trains run at all during sporting events and the money saved is used to give everyone a “buck a beer” coupon.
Flat out incompetence corruption
All those cyclists he’s forcing off of roadways are going to need somewhere to park their new cars. It is clearly the only solution to congestion…
How did I know this was Doug Ford before even clicking on it?
Do you have a source for those numbers? Id be surprised if the fuel +registration taxes cover even 1/3 of the cost of roads. Maybe they could cover basic maintaince like painting, plowing, and potholes, but initial construction or resurfacing likely needs heavy investment from elsewhere
Edit: i see the OP does have a source for tax revenue numbers, but it is unclear exactly what is covered under the taxes. Does it include funds for police for traffic enforcement? Funding for emergency services responding to accidents? The site isn’t clear if new road construction or lane widening is included in the budgets as road maintaince or not.
The point being made isnt that roads aren’t worth the investment, its more so that everyone pays for roads regardless of the amount of use they get out of them, but that same investment into cycling paths, bus lanes, or trains is viewed as “government subsidies” or “wasting money on infrastructure that won’t be used by drivers”.
Most automated camera tickets for buses, red lights, or speeding only result in municipal fines and no insurance complications. The camera can reliably get the lisence plate but the tech and bureaucracy isn’t ready to prove who was driving each car.
Comparing self driving cars to American driving standards is kinda a moot point because the american safety standards are so low that death and injury is considered the cost of doing business.
I’d be curious to see how well waymo performs compared to a country with far safer road designs and drivers that are better trained and respect rules of the road more frequently.
Road budgets and projects go way over all the time and the vast majority of those projects still go through.
His excuses for what is causing congestion are statistically wrong, he blames the solutions to congestion as the causes.
The province has hinted at planing some other transit projects so lets cancel new projects that would work better in unison.
He explicitly states that new solutions cannot slow down private automobiles, despite them be unfairly catered to for decades while every other transportation method is left underfunded, unreliable, and is already much slower than private automobiles.
He then has the audacity to claim this will lead to amore inclusive solution when he is explicitly excluding cyclists from safe infrastructure.
But public transport is COMMUNISM. Someone needs to be profiting!
What the hell is up with your trains where it takes 55 minutes to go 20kms?
Electric vehicles still put trie dust into the air.
