(Although TBF, that’s because I bought during the Great Recession – I wouldn’t be able to afford to re-buy the same house today.)

grue@lemmy.worldMto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Throw away your children’s future for an overpriced metal boxEnglish6·4 days agoI don’t align with the fuckcars movement.
Why is that, and what would you suggest we do to improve its appeal? I recognize that we’re sort of the radical fringe of urbanism and that’s on purpose (a radical fringe is necessary for any movement, in order to make the moderates look moderate), but within that bound I am interested in trying to develop as much credibility as possible.

grue@lemmy.worldOPMto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•Toronto is considering raising parking fees and lowering transit fares during concerts and sports games to encourage people to take public transit rather than their carEnglish8·4 days agoIt’s been a long time since I cared about sports, but I remember when I used to watch them that a lot of games on the East coast (and Toronto counts, being in EST) would start relatively late so that they could be televized during prime time on the West coast. I could easily imagine a baseball game ending after 1AM if it went into extra innings or something.
I guess the qualifier for me is, is the law something that’s in place for public good? If so, it should be enforced.
That’s supposed to be the case for every law.
Local deliveries should be happening in electric vehicles.
Including cargo bikes, not only electric box trucks.

grue@lemmy.worldto Linux Gaming@lemmy.world•I have finally gotten rid of WindowsEnglish202·6 days agoPersonally, I recommend quitting Windows cold-turkey and not dual-booting at all. If a game genuinely doesn’t work without dual-booting, you don’t need it. No game is so important that it’s worth compromising your security, privacy, and property rights over.

But that’s very different than claiming it was being described in a comic from almost a hundred years ago, or claiming that the single-direction barricade depicted was intended to be a countermeasure for it (let alone an effective one).
grue@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Why is the manosphere on the rise? UN Women sounds the alarm over online misogynyEnglish3·8 days agoThere are 2 issues here that are being mixed.
One is women not being allowed to positions of power. The other is with women being underrepresented in certain fields (e.g., stem).
I think it’s fair to mix them, to an extent, because I think the degree of underrepresentation is often directly proportional to the prestige/pay/power of the field. Both are symptoms of the same underlying issue, which is bigots discounting women’s competency and refusing to entrust them with things of importance.
To be fair, not considering unicode support a priority is a pretty damn English-language-centric attitude.
