In one of City Nerd’s episodes, he showed a town in the northwest. In the town the gym teacher at the school rides his bike around to “bus” kids to school on their bikes. They “pick up” more kids as they go. Parents and community members joined in. They all rode to school in the mornings.

    I cried with joy

I think this is called a bike bus and they are becoming more common. Some parents are evening joining in with cargo bikes to help carry backpacks and such.

A big factor is a group of cyclists takes more road space and is much more visible, making it harder for drivers to force them off the road and into the gutters.

I frequently see kids that are absolutely astounded that I can zip down the bike path, and steer with no hands. The astonishment on their faces always makes my day. I’m pretty sure I could learn to ride a unicycle, but I don’t really want to go slow.

When I was in high school I used to bike practically everywhere.

A few years ago I got a bike again in the hopes that using it would improve my health. Despite still living in the same city I now felt so unsafe on the road that I sold it after a few months.
